Nicole O. may look like any other member of ProHealth West Wood Health & Fitness Center when she works out in the pool or gym, but her workouts are world-class.
Nicole is a triathlete, she finished in 11th place at the 2022 World Triathlon Championship Series in Abu Dhabi, and is training for the world championship finals in Spain this September. Over the past six years, she has competed in two dozen triathlons. She won the USA Triathlon State Championships in her age group in 2022.
Nicole joined West Wood four years ago, primarily to train in the pool. Her world championship triathlons include a 2.4-mile swim, 112 miles of cycling and 26.2 miles of running – an entire marathon.
“I like that it’s close, it’s really nice and it’s not overly crowded,” she said. “I don’t have to wait for weight room equipment. The lifeguards are really good about assigning lanes for swimmers. Everyone at the front desk is really nice,” says Nicole.
Nicole is pleased to have a fitness center that can address her training needs so close to home. She trains three times a week at West Wood, primarily in the pool and weight room. She usually runs outside, but West Wood’s indoor track is there when she needs it. She even takes a West Wood class when she can, including BODYPUMP™, an intense weight and cardio workout.
In the pool, she alters workouts between training for endurance with continuous swimming, training for speed with rest intervals, and training for technique. When she is honing her swimming technique, she uses paddles, a float buoy to focus on her arms, a kickboard to focus on her legs, and occasionally a snorkel. Most of her swimming sessions total about 2,000 yards and take 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
Nicole usually pairs swimming with weight training. From the pool, she goes upstairs to the West Wood gym to stretch, then focuses on building strength in her arms, legs or core using the fitness center’s equipment. Some days she will concentrate on improving the speed and force of her movement with a variety of exercises like pushups, jumping and kicking.
For biking and running, she uses Waukesha County’s Lake Country Trail. Sometimes she bikes country roads, which can come with surprises.
“I got chased by a camel on my bike in Merton,” she said. “I heard it lived there on private property. Thankfully, it stopped and just went home.”
Nicole will compete in the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon on June 25, which is also the USA Triathlon State Championships, and in the USA Triathlon Nationals in Milwaukee on Aug. 4.
“Milwaukee is a great venue. It’s a great course,” she said. “We get to go over the Hoan Bridge, and my friends and family get to come to the race.”
Nicole works full time as a paralegal and operations director for a law firm, which involves some travel. She also volunteers to assist with shorter local races when she can.
